This publication is designed to educate children about the effects of product reuse and recycling on global climate change. Through a series of word games, the publication describes how children can prevent climate change by reducing solid waste.

There are three important steps to follow to minimize the amount of materials that end up as trash in landfills:
- Reduce - Take the time to purchase products that are packaged responsibly with a minimum of waste.
- Reuse - Find ways to give new life to things that might otherwise end up in the trash. Use the database below to learn how to reuse common household items.
- Recycle - Whenever possible, purchase products that are made from recycled materials. Sort your recyclables and take them to a local recycling center regularly.
Recycle City Offline
Once you have saved the .zip file on your computer, you won't need to be connected to the Internet to explore Recycle City. Just a few more steps:
- Open the folder where you saved the file.
- Double-click on the file, and follow the program's instructions to expand the file.
- A list of the unzipped files should appear on the screen. Double click on "index.html" to open the Recycle City Home Page in your Web browser (remember, you don't need to get on the Internet, even if it asks you to connect).
- Explore the sights! Recycle City should work the same way it does when you're connected to the Internet.

Sample Goals
Reduce the amount of paper going into the landfill as much as possible, and spend as little money as possible.
Remove as much organic waste from the waste stream as you can.
Set an overall spending limit ($200,000, for example) and find out which combination of programs within your budget achieves the most waste reduction.
How much waste can be removed from the waste stream using programs that have no cost to the city?
What is the optimum combination of programs for the city? (This is a hard one, and it may take up to an hour to try all the programs and determine the cost/benefit of them all.)

Earth is surrounded by thousands of satellites carrying out important work to provide telecommunications and navigation services, help us understand our climate, and answer fundamental questions about the Universe.
However, as our use of space accelerates like never before, these satellites find themselves navigating increasingly congested orbits in an environment criss-crossed by streams of fast-moving debris fragments resulting from collisions, fragmentations and breakups in space.
Each fragment can damage additional satellites, with fears that a cascade of collisions may eventually render some orbits around Earth no longer useable. Additionally, the extent of the harm of the drastic increase in launches and number of objects re-entering our atmosphere and oceans is not yet known.
So, does space debris already represent a crisis?
The documentary explores the current situation in Earth’s orbits and explains the threat space debris poses to our future in space. It also outlines what might be done about space debris and how we might reach true sustainability in space, because our actions today will have consequences for generations to come.

ESA’s Space Safety Programme aims to safeguard the future of spaceflight and to keep us, Earth and our infrastructure on the ground and in space safe from hazards originating in space.
From asteroids and solar storms to the human-made problem of space debris, ESA works on missions and projects to understand the dangers and mitigate them.
In the longer term, to ensure a safe and sustainable future in space, ESA aims to establish a circular economy in space. To get there, the Agency is working on the technology development necessary to make in-orbit servicing and zero-debris spacecraft a reality.

Today, the problem of rubbish in space has become a nightmare for astronauts. The amount of debris in space has been steadily increasing for the past 20 years as more ...and more satellites have been placed in orbit and numerous missiles have been tested. In 2009, two working satellites collided sending tons of new space trash into orbit travelling at an incredible speed.
This kind of event creates a vicious circle as each time debris collides, more and more waste is produced. All those involved in the conquest of space are now forced to monitor the clouds of waste constantly and to divert their working satellites in case of emergency. But many satellites have been “forgotten” and will inevitably cause collisions. Currently, all efforts to minimize or avoid this debris are inadequate and may have heavy consequences on our satellites and other activities on Earth. It’s high time we cleaned up our space mess!
Throughout the world, engineers have been coming up with more and more inventive schemes to clear the space trash and put their inventions to the test: magnetic nets in Japan, disintegrating lasers in Australia, garbage collecting satellites in Switzerland, waste hunting vessels in Europe and gas atomizing rockets in the USA. Star wars will not happen… but the war on waste has been declared.

Nationally syndicated cartoonist Jim Toomey, creator of Sherman's Lagoon, has joined forces with The Pew Charitable Trusts to illustrate "marine debris" and other terms associated with our oceans.

You know that feeling of having too much stuff – gadgets, loose socks, maybe a couple of abandoned fishing vessels? Now imagine that multiplied by, oh, one trillion, and you start to understand how the ocean must feel about marine debris.
Marine debris is all the manmade stuff that ends up in the ocean, from soda cans, plastic bottles and the sun hat you lost last summer--to abandoned fishing gear, entire vessels that are sunken or marooned. Whether it got there on purpose or by accident, and even if that hat happens to fit a certain octopus just perfectly, it still qualifies as marine debris.
Scientists say there are 5 and a quarter trillion pieces of plastic alone in the ocean, and that’s only part of the marine debris problem. All that junk is killing and injuring sea life, impeding navigation, leaching chemicals, and even ending up in our food.
Plastics, for example, break down into tiny particles that resemble fish eggs. Fish consume those particles, we eat the fish and, well, you know.
Marine debris is present in every ocean, carried far and wide by currents and wind.
People – and probably some fish – are working on ways to clean all this stuff up but, as yet, nobody has found a solution… or your hat, for that matter.

But it’s estimated that no more than 10% of plastic produced has ever been recycled. The documentary “Plastic Wars,” from FRONTLINE and NPR, reveals how plastic makers for decades have publicly promoted recycling, despite privately expressing doubts that widespread plastic recycling would ever be economically viable.
